Computer Modeling Group at MSU
For the purposes of this interest group, "Computer
Modeling" is defined as research projects that involve all or most of
the following steps:
- Describing a physical, biological, chemical, etc. system by a mathematical
model, which is most frequently (but not necessarily) a system of differential
equations (ODE's or PDE's)
- Using Numerical Analysis to build a discrete computational scheme
for the mathematical model
- Writing an algorithm for efficient (often parallel) solution of the
above scheme
- Implementing that algorithm in a particular programming language for
a particular platform -- usually on a high performance parallel machine or
cluster
- Conducting the numerical simulations
- Collecting, processing, and visualizing the resulting data
- Interpreting that data for the original physical system
